Ian Thompson is an experienced corporate and transactional attorney, with 20 plus years’ experience in negotiating and executing complex customer, vendor and partner agreements, equity and debt financing, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, and software licensing, and 10 plus years’ experience as a member of leadership teams in the satellite and wireless industry. A former executive and General Counsel, Ian brings a keen business sense to his practice, and employs a pragmatic and execution-focused approach to counseling his clients.
Ian joined the Ascent Law team as a partner in January 2019, after founding and operating his own law firm for over two years. He was previously Executive Vice President and General Counsel for SeaMobile, Inc. and its MTN Communications operating subsidiary, a leading provider of managed communications services and software to the global maritime industry and U.S. government. From 2006 until its successful sale to Emerging Markets Communications (EMC) in July 2015, Ian oversaw all legal and regulatory affairs for the company. In that role he negotiated and drafted all material customer and vendor agreements, executed over $200MM of equity and debt financings, oversaw HR functions, managed joint ventures, and ran multiple M&A processes (both buy and sell side). As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, Ian played a key role in strategic planning and business development, managing operations and overseeing compliance functions.
Prior to SeaMobile, Ian worked from 2003-2006 at Beacon Law Advisors, a boutique corporate law firm based in Seattle. Prior to joining Beacon Law, he was an associate in the Corporate Finance group at Perkins Coie from 1999-2002. He began his career in Washington D.C., as an attorney with Williams & Jensen, a top regulatory and government relations firm. Ian also previously founded and operated a wine sales and marketing business, Red Barn Wines, LLC.
Ian lives in Seattle with his two children. He enjoys listening to (and volunteering at) KEXP and playing ice hockey. Ian currently serves as President and a Board member of the BEHL adult hockey league.
